Sustainable Packing Cubes: What Actually Makes Them Sustainable

Bag-all Best Packing Cubes 3-pack in cream cotton with mesh tops
16 sep. 20264 min läsning

Short answer: a sustainable packing cube is made from a natural fiber such as cotton or from recycled fabric, is printed with water-based dyes rather than solvent inks, and is built well enough that you keep it for years instead of replacing it. Most packing cubes sold today fail the first test, because they are cut from virgin polyester or nylon. Bag-all's cubes are 100% natural cotton, and our Basic line is recycled nylon spun from plastic bottles.

Why most packing cubes are not sustainable

Packing cubes became popular because they are light, cheap and compressible. Almost all of them are made from virgin polyester, which is a petroleum product. It does not break down, and every wash sheds microfibers. The cubes also tend to be bought as a set of six or eight, used for a trip or two, and replaced when a zipper fails. That cycle is the problem.

Sustainability in a packing cube comes down to three things: what it is made of, how it was printed and finished, and how long you will actually use it.

1. Material: natural cotton or recycled fabric

Cotton is the simplest choice. It is a plant fiber, it is washable, and at the end of its life it breaks down. Bag-all packing cubes and travel bags are made from 100% natural cotton with a mesh top panel so you can see what is inside. Cotton is not the lightest option, but a three-piece set still weighs less than a paperback, and cotton holds its shape in a suitcase far better than thin polyester.

If you want something lighter and water resistant, look for recycled nylon or recycled PET. Our Packing Bags Set repurposes six plastic bottles per set. That is fabric that already existed, put to a second use.

What to avoid: "eco" labels with no material listed. If a product page does not say what the fabric is, assume virgin polyester.

2. Printing and trims

Prints and labels matter more than people think. Solvent-based inks are the norm on cheap cubes. Bag-all prints every design with water-based dyes, and the grosgrain ribbons on our bags are woven from 100% recycled PET bottles. Small details, but they add up across a whole set.

3. The one that lasts is the sustainable one

The most sustainable packing cube is the one you do not replace. Look for a strong zipper, double-stitched seams and a fabric heavy enough to survive being washed. Then make it yours. A monogrammed cube is a cube you do not lose, lend out or throw away. It is also why we plant a tree for every monogram we stitch.

How Bag-all does it

  • Fabric: 100% natural cotton, or recycled nylon for the Basic line.
  • Dyes: water-based on every print.
  • Trims: ribbons from recycled PET bottles.
  • Packaging: orders ship in compostable, plastic-free mailers.
  • Beyond the product: a tree planted for every monogram, and more than 350 microloans funded for women entrepreneurs.

Bag-all was founded in New York in 2013 by Swedish stylist Jennifer Jansch with exactly this idea: replace single-use plastic bags with cotton bags you keep. We have no outside investors, which is why the materials have not changed.

Questions people ask

What are the most sustainable packing cubes made of?

Natural cotton or recycled fabric such as recycled nylon or recycled PET. Bag-all packing cubes are 100% natural cotton, and the Basic line is recycled nylon made from plastic bottles.

Are cotton packing cubes heavier than polyester ones?

Slightly. A three-piece cotton set weighs less than a paperback book, and cotton holds its shape in a suitcase better than thin polyester.

Can you wash cotton packing cubes?

Yes. Cotton packing cubes can be machine washed on a gentle cycle and air dried, which is one reason they last longer than polyester cubes.

Do packing cubes actually save space?

They organize more than they compress. A structured cube keeps folded clothes flat and stops them shifting, which lets you pack more neatly into the same suitcase.

Does Bag-all use plastic packaging?

No. Orders ship in compostable, plastic-free mailers, and product ribbons are woven from recycled PET bottles.
